RALEIGH, NC - Sophomore Brandon Matthews tied for 38th overall at the NCAA Raleigh Regional carding a six-over 77 on the final day to finish the three-day tournament held at NC State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course with a seven-over 220.
The Owl standout, who was hampered by a quadruple bogey on the 15th hole Saturday, failed to advance to the finals in his first NCAA Championship. He is the first Owl to take part in the NCAA Championship since 1997, when the entire Temple team qualified for the regional round.
The quadruple bogey on the 15th, his sixth hole of the round, was too much for the Dupont, Pa. native to recover from. He did play even par over the final 12 holes, birdying twice while bogeying two as well.
Matthews will have a busy summer as he plans to compete in both the US Amateur Championship (Aug. 11-17) and the British Amateur Championships (June 16-21).
