Five Owls Named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes
5.28.14 | Women's Rowing
PHILADELPHIA – Five Temple women's rowers have earned National Scholar-Athlete recognition from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
"We often talk about how performance in the classroom and performance on the water are inextricably linked," head coach Rebecca Grzybowski said. "I'm proud of these five women for their commitment to academic and athletic excellence and happy to see their efforts rewarded."
Juniors Susan O'Neil Coyne and Gina Inverso, sophomores Grace Kroner and Emily Leyland, and senior Allison Watkins earned the national honor for sporting a 3.5+ cumulative grade-point average (GPA).
Coyne and Watkins earned the recognition for the second consecutive season, while Inverso, Kroner, and Leyland are all first-time recipients.
Watkins, an American second-team All-Conference honoree, was a member of the Varsity 8+ that placed 4th at American Athletic Conference Championship.
Coyne, Kroner, and Leyland were all members of the second Varsity 8+ that made the grand final at the Dad Vail Regatta and placed fourth at the American championship.
Inverso was a member of the Varsity 4+ that made the grand final at the Dad Vails for the first time in program history and then placed fourth at the conference championship.
To be eligible for the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honor, student-athletes were required to have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and, rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or race in a conference regatta.
