Softball Drops a Pair to USF on the Final Day of the Regular Season
5.4.14 | Softball
AMBLER, Pa. – Temple softball and USF met for the final two games of the regular season on Sunday, May 4, at Temple Softball Stadium in Ambler, Pa. The visiting Bulls (40-14, 13-5 AAC) got the best of the Owls (15-29, 5-13) in both games, winning the opener, 12-0, and the nightcap, 7-1.
In the opener, the Bulls struck in the first innings when Stephanie Medina doubled in Kourtney Salvarola with two outs to give her squad a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Medina struck again, singling in a run for a 2-0 advantage.
After an error in the fourth allowed USF to bring another run in, the Bulls broke the game open in the fifth with a three-run frame. Medina continued to have a day, sending a pitch over the right field wall to drive in all three runs in the inning.
The sixth was a scoreless frame for both teams, but South Florida struck again with a big inning in the top of the seventh. USF scored six runs on five hits in the inning, including a three-run homer by Lee Ann Spivey and a two-run double off the bat of Kassandra Moeller.
The Owls had a chance to break up the shutout in the bottom of the inning, getting two runners on with no outs by way of walk and hit by pitch, but relief pitcher Sam Greiner got two foul outs and a strike out to end the game.
Leah Lucas collected Temple's only hit in the game, a one out double in the fourth.
Sara Nevins (26-7) was the winning pitcher in 6.0 innings of work, walking just one and striking out 10. Jessica Mahoney (2-9) took the loss, going 6.0 innings and surrendering nine hits and nine runs, walking five and striking out three.
The Owls got on the board first in the nightcap when Erin Drennan sent a ball over the left centerfield fence to give her squad a 1-0 lead. The hit was the second of Drennan's career, and her first was also a homerun.
That was the only hit the Cherry & White would get, however, as pitcher Erica Nunn (11-7) dominated in 7.0 innings, walking two and striking out a USF record 18 batters.
In the meantime, the Bulls went on to score once in the top of the third to tie the game, and put up a six-spot in the fourth to create the final 7-1 score.
Amanda Gatt (4-7) got the loss to TU, going 5.0 innings and allowing 10 hits, seven runs, one walk and striking out three.
With the regular-season complete, the Owls have secured the sixth seed in the upcoming American Athletic Conference Championship, being held at the University of Houston May 8-10. Temple will face third-seeded Louisville (33-20) at 11 a.m. EST on Thursday, May 8, in the first game of the tournament.
