PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's rowing advanced five boats after the first day of action at the 2014 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on Friday.
The varsity 8+, comprised of Kelsey Franks (coxswain), Jackie Lees (stroke), Lea Millio (seat-7), Kara Carson (seat-6), Allison Watkins (seat-5), Callista DiGuardia (seat-4), Megan Boyer (seat-3), Emily Opperman (seat-2), and Moira Meekes (bow), captured second place in its heat in a time of 6:40.888 behind rival Drexel (6:34.230). The Owls advance to Saturday's semifinal race at 10 a.m. The final is scheduled for 3:23 p.m.
The varsity 4+ boat, comprised of Eleanor Oken (coxswain), Lily Papaleo (stroke), Gina Inverso (seat-3), Devin Dakes (seat-2), and Kathy Bostion (bow), took to the Schuylkill River first, narrowly missing out on an opportunity to advance. Army claimed the win (7:14), while Drexel (7:20.032) edged the Owls (7:20.209). The Owls advanced to Saturday's semifinal race at 9:40 a.m.
The novice 4+, comprised of Aubrie Foden (coxswain), Gabriella Kelly (seat-4), Sydney Garofolo (seat-3), Sarah Asman (seat-2), and Kathleen Mascitelli (bow), scored a big win in its heat, placing first in 7L:39.769, 44 second better than second-place Cleveland (8:05,879). The Owls advanced to Saturday's semifinal at 7:27 a.m.
The second varsity 8+, comprised of Erin Matz (coxswain), Stephanie Barber (stroke), Blair Bradley (seat-7), Victoria Joye (seat-6), Lauren Kidd (seat-5), Annie Buckley (seat-4), Emily Leyland (seat-3), Grace Kroner (seat-2), and Susan O'Neil Coyne (bow), finished second in its heat in 6:41.089 behind Bucknell (6:36.454 to advance to Saturday's final at 2:33 p.m.
In pair racing, Temple's Kelly Hill (stroke) and Stephanie Barber (bow) captured fourth place in a time of 8:16 behind winner William and Mary (8:05).
Temple's Novice 8+ boat, comprised of Nicole Barth (coxswain), Samantha Sederstrand (stroke), Kayla Dorney (seat-7), Taryn Beaver (seat-6), Emily Mehler (seat-5), Rachael Braccia (seat-4), Jenna Bahel (seat-3), Kaitlyn Grisanti (seat-2), and Imani Johnson (bow), took a commanding eight-second win over the field, finishing in 6:54.452. Rollins was second in 7:02.230. TU advanced to Saturday's semifinal at 8:09 a.m.
Action resumes on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, May 10. Temple's first race is at 7:27 a.m. The schedule is listed below.
"We are having a really good start to the weekend," head coach Rebecca Grzybowski said. "The varsity 8 had a commanding second-place finish. They felt in control, and they feel like they have another gear to go tomorrow. They are all fired up and ready to take on the semifinals tomorrow."
6ABC will televise Saturday's finals LIVE with host Matt O'Connell and four-time Dad Vail champion Ferdinand Bergen (Temple '01). Coverage begins at 1 p.m.
