PHILADELPHIA – Three additional recruits have been added to Temple Volleyball head coach Bakeer Ganes' team for the 2014 season, making it a total of six freshmen for this coming fall. Geena Bevenour (Wayne, Pa./Pope John Paul II), Emily Nicholson (Denver, Colo./Denver East) and Dara Peric (Belgrade, Serbia/High School of Tourism) join a class that already included Izabella Rapacz (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Janine Simmons (Centreville, Va./Centreville) and Malia Smith (Gardena, Calif./Notre Dame Academy).
Bevenour, a 5-5 defensive specialist/setter, was named the Times Herald and The Pottstown Mercury's Player of the Year as a senior in addition to earning first team all-state and all-district honors for a second year in a row. She recorded 670 assists and 206 digs in helping lead her team to a 27-6-1 record in 2013. She was a four-year varsity letterwinner, compiling an overall record of 98-24-8 with the Golden Panthers. Outside of high school, she attended Nationals six years in a row with the Synergy Volleyball Club. Bevenour also earned three letters in track & field and one in lacrosse.
An accomplished student off the court, Bevenour was the Student Council President, an honors student and the recipient of the Montgomery County Future Community Leaders Award. She plans to major in communications at Temple, specifically in broadcast journalism.
Nicholson is a 6-4 middle blocker/right side hitter who plays for the Colorado Volleyball Association (CVA). She will graduate from Denver East High School, but played exclusively for her club team as a junior and senior and was a teammate of current Temple freshman Halle McCullough. With her club, Nicholson played in the Junior Nationals in 2011, 2012 and 2013, and she was twice invited to participate in the USAV High Performance program. In the summer of 2014, her club team will play in Nicaragua while on a community service trip.
Peric, a 6-0 outside hitter, will join Sandra Sydlik (junior from Berlin, Germany) as one of two players from overseas on the Owls' roster. Peric won four state championships with her High School of Tourism team, and was also one of the most accomplished students at her school. Her grade-point-average was above a 3.6 in each year of her high school career, and she plans to major in business at Temple.
