Temple Duo Have Solid First Day at U.S. Amateur

Temple's dynamic duo of junior Brandon Matthews and senior Matt Teesdale had a solid first day at the 114th U.S. Amateur Championship Monday and remain in the hunt for spots in the match play round.

Matthews, who teed off in the morning, shot a one-over 73 to tie for 70th overall among the 312-man field while Teesdale, who started his round in the afternoon, finished with a two-over 74 to tie for 110th.  Both played the Atlanta Athletic  Club's 7,381-yard, par 36-36-72 Riverside Course.  

Tuesday the two will play the 7,409/7,428-yard, par 35-36-71 Highlands Course with Teesdale teeing off in the morning (8:50 AM) and Matthews in the afternoon (2:40 PM).  Both will start at the 10th hole.

Following Tuesday's round, the field of 312 will be whittled down to 64 players.  Six rounds of match play will begin on Aug. 13 and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Aug. 17.
