Women's Tennis Gets Fall Season Underway at Cissie Leary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore women's tennis player Anais Nussaume had a strong first day at the tournament, winning two singles matches in the B flight to stay in the hunt for a title at the 18th annual Cissie Leary Invitational, hosted by Penn on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 12-14. 

Nussaume defeated her first opponent in the round of 16, 6-4, 7-6(5) and won her second match 0-6, 6-1, 10-6 in order to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. Also winning once in singles play was freshman Yana Kohn who was a 6-3, 6-2 winner in the opening round before dropping her next match to move on to the consolation bracket.

Freshman Alina Abdurakhimova and senior Rebecca Breland dropped both their opening round and consolation matches, but will still compete in the flight A and B 3rd round brackets. Freshman Monet Stuckey-Willis, who dropped her opening round match will be active in the flight B 3rd round bracket.

Sophomore Dina Karina, dropped her opening round match 6-3, 6-0 while sophomore Mariana Bedon won the first match in the round of 16, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 in the flight A consolation bracket. Bedon will compete in the quarterfinals of the flight A consolation bracket on Saturday.

In doubles play, Bedon and Nussaume were successful in the round of 32 defeating their opponents 8-4 to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday. Also winning on Friday in doubles action were Okajima and Willis with a 8-3 victory, also advancing them to the next round.

Duo Breland and Karina did not fair as well, dropping their doubles match 8-2 but will still be active in the consolation bracket. 

Action at the tournament resumes Saturday morning at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
