CHICAGO - The Phoenix Mercury, featuring 2006 Temple women's basketball alum Candice Dupree among a number of standout players, won the 2014 WNBA Championship on Sept. 12. Dupree, a former All-American for the Owls who was named the 2006 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, tied for game-high honors with 24 points along with Diana Taurasi.

The Mercury defeated the Chicago Sky 87-82 to complete a three-game sweep in the finals. Dupree was a former member of the Sky, getting drafted by Chicago as the sixth overall pick in 2006. In her first season she was named to the Eastern Conference WNBA All-Star team and competed against her former coach, Dawn Staley, in the All-Star game. Dupree was traded to Phoenix in 2010.

While Taurasi was named MVP, she gave a lot of credit to Dupree after the game.

After she reached the podium, (Taurasi) slid her MVP trophy over toward her teammate Candice Dupree, a former Sky player who also scored 24 points on 11-for-16 shooting.

"Candice has probably been overlooked her whole career on whatever team she has played on," Taurasi said. "I've never played with someone that I'm so confident going into a game with. You always know she's going to be able to play.

"She led us in assists. She never passes, so you knew we were going to win today," Taurasi said with a smile.
