PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Anais Nussaume had a strong performance at the second day of competition at the Cissie Leary Invitational. The sophomore won her quarterfinals match 0-6, 6-1, 10-6 before dropping a tough loss in the semi-finals to her opponent 2-6, 6-2, 14-12.
"Nussaume had a great tournament," said head coach Steve Mauro. "She really played well both days and I was happy with how she performed today in singles."
In consolation play, sophomore Mariana Bedon won her quarterfinals match 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 before dropping her semi-finals match 7-5, 6-2. In the flight A and B 3rd rounds on Saturday, Temple's Alina Abdurakhimova and Monet Stuckey-Willis won their matches 6-7, 7-5, 10-5 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.
Temple's two doubles teams still active on Saturday both lost their matches to conclude play.
"It was great to see the three new freshmen play they way they did this weekend," said Mauro. "They had wins over some real tough performers from the Ivy League schools. I hope that we continue to get stronger with each competition."
The Owls will not have anyone competing on Sunday at Penn but will be back in action at the SJU Invite, hosted by Saint Joseph's the weekend of Sept. 26-28.
