9.25.14 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer begins its American Athletic Conference portion of the schedule against Cincinnati Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  The Owls look to win the second matchup ever between the two teams.  Temple won last year's game on Senior Day with a goal from Vaughn Spurrier less than 30 seconds in double overtime.

HEADLINES
  • Temple is 1-6-1 to open the 2014 season.  The Owls are at the end of a three-game home stand after playing four straight games on the road.
  • Midfielder Miguel Polley was named Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week last Monday.  With the Owls trailing La Salle 2-0 at halftime, Polley started the comeback with his first collegiate goal in the 48th minute.
  • Junior midfielder/forward Jared Martinelli was selected to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll last week.  Martinelli finished the comeback against La Salle when he scored his first goal of the season with six minutes left in regulation to tie the game.
  • Sophomore defender Robert Sagel, senior goalkeeper Dan Scheck and Martinelli were selected to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team.  Scheck was voted by the coaches as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
  • 11 underclassmen have started a game for Temple. 16 total players have appeared in a game.
  • Freshmen midfielder Felipe Liborio has started all eight games for Temple.  Three other freshmen have started at least five games for the Owls:  forward Olli Tynkkynen, midfielder Miguel Polley and midfielder Brendon Creed.
  • Temple was predicted to finish fifth in the conference by the preseason coaches' poll.
  • Scheck is currently the career leader in goals allowed average (0.79) and ranks tied for fourth in career wins (15).
  • Sagel has played all 753 minutes of the season.  Liborio is second in minutes played with 749.
  • Cincinnati comes into the game with a 3-3-2 record.  After starting the season with three losses and two ties, the Bearcats have won three straight games.  The win streak started at IPFW (5-0) and continued at home against Eastern Illinois (1-0) and Cleveland State (2-0).
  • The Bearcats were picked to finish last in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.  They finished in last place last year with a 1-7-0 conference record.  The lone conference win came against No. 6 Louisville 2-0 at home on Oct. 23.
  • Cincinnati returned over 80% of their scoring and 300-plus career starts to this season's squad.  Defender Richardo Israel was selected to the preseason all-conference team.
  • Forward John Manga leads the team in goals (six) and points (12).  Five other players have scored one goal.  Goalkeeper Alex has played every minute in net for Cincinnati, making 31 saves with three shutouts.
  • This marks the beginning of conference play for both teams.
  • Temple is coming off 10-4-4, 3-1-4 season where they finished fourth in the conference.
