News & Notes Following Temple's 36-10 victory at Connecticut

Temple is now atop the American Athletic Conference standings. By virtue of a 3-1 overall record, Temple holds the early advantage over USF (2-3) and Tulsa (1-3) who are also 1-0 in conference play.

Only four FBS teams have average over 35.0 points per game and allowed 12.0 or less. Temple (39.0,12.0) joins TCU (44.7, 7.0), Ole Miss (39.0, 8.5) and Notre Dame (35.0, 11.5).

With three wins, Temple has already exceeded its win total from 2013 (2-10).

Temple has been winning games with a stout defense. The Owls have allowed just 12.0 points per game.

The defense allowed its first passing TD of the season at UConn. Overall the defense has allowed just five TDs all year.

Temple allowed a FG in the 2nd Q and a TD in the 3rd Q. The FG was the first score after six shutout quarters and the TD was the first after 7 without.

With an INT and fumble return for TDs yesterday, Temple's defense added two scores to their 2014 total. The unit now has scored five times this year. Temple's defense and special teams have scored more than they allowed this season (7 TDs scored/6 TDs allowed).

CB Tavon Young ended UConn's first drive (a 15-play, 54-yard march) with an INT that he returned 93 yards for a TD. It was Young's third INT of the season and the 6th of his career tying him with Kevin Kroboth for 15th on the school's all-time list. The 93-yard return was the second longest in school history behind Elijah Joseph's 95 yard return in 2009 (Buffalo).

Temple now has 17 takeaways this season (9 fumbles/8 INTs), second in the NCAA to Virginia's 18, after recording just 14 a year ago. TU is +10 in turnover margin.
DE Praise Martin-Oguike was a human highlight film putting Temple in position to win its first conference game of the season. Martin-Oguike put pressure on the quarterback all day earning his first career sack to go with 2 QB hurries. When he got beat by teammate Sean Chandler to QB Chandler Whitmer (the freshman's first career sack and forced fumble), he recovered Whitmer's fumble and raced to the end zone for a touchdown. Overall he had 6 tackles (3 solos), a sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery and a TD.

Young and Martin became the 12th and 13th players to score a TD for Temple this season.

LB Tyler Matakevich joined the scoring party with a safety. In his return to Connecticut, the Stratford native collected 7 tackles, a sack and the safety.

Redshirt freshman DB Nate L. Smith snatched his first career interception.

After a lackluster start that saw Temple with a 7-3 halftime lead, QB P.J. Walker was electric in the second half propelling the Owls to a 36-10 win and first place in the American Athletic Conference. Walker, who finished 20-29-231-1TD passing and 9-24-1TD rushing (officially he had 7 yards on the ground due to 17 lost yards on sacks), was 14-19 for 208 yards in the second half. On the first two drives of the 3rd quarter, Walker was 6-7 for 121 yards passing, capping the first drive with a 42-yard strike to WR Jalen Fitzpatrick and the second with a 1-yard plunge of his own.  Walker has now thrown for 200+ yards in 10 of his 11 career starts and thrown for at least one TD in all 11.

WR Jalen Fitzpatrick caught a 42-yard pass from Walker for a touchdown. The play was the longest from scrimmage for the Owls this season. Fitzpatrick has now scored a TD in each game this year. He finished with 6 catches for 108 yards – the second 100+ yard game of his career. He also went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career – 87-1,080-9TDs

Austin Jones seems to have cured Temple's kicking woes. The freshman walk on made two field goals, including a 47-yarder. He is 18-18 on PATs and 5-7 on field goals for the season after the Owls had just three FGs all of last year.
