Field Hockey Edged at Drexel, 3-2

10.18.15 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA (Drexel) - Despite a commanding advantage in offensive possessions, Temple field hockey suffered a 3-2 loss at Drexel on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons (6-8) scored on three of their four total shots, while the Owls (3-12) got just two goals on 19 shots.

Temple came from a goal behind twice, but was unable to a third time despite a few great chances in the final minutes. Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made five saves in the game, including two in the final five minutes.

"We didn't deserve to win that game," said Temple head coach Marybeth Freeman. "When you have that many opportunities up front, you have to be able to finish. We're not looking to just our forwards or midfielders, our attack starts in our backfield. Unfortunately, we weren't able to put those pieces together to finish in the circle today."

The Owls out-shot Drexel 11-2 in the first half, but went into halftime down 2-1 as the Dragons were able to capitalize on both of their opportunities.

Drexel got on the board early, scoring on a corner in the third minute of the game. Just over eight minutes later, Temple's aggressiveness on offense paid off when a Sarah Deck pass found an open Sarah Keer on the top right of the circle, Keer's strong shot to the far post tied the game 1-1 with 24:29 left in the half.

At the midway point of the first half, Drexel found another opening at its end, and Alexandra Pickens put the Dragons up 2-1, just barely beating Temple goalkeeper Haley Mitchell to the ball on a redirect from Megan Wiest.

Just over 12 minutes into the second half, Hattie Kuhns sent a long pass in from the right to Erin VanHorn in front of the cage, and her close-range shot slipped past Gilchrist to tie the game at 2-2.

Temple earned back-to-back corners near the 14-minute mark and got off a strong shot from Alyssa Delp, but Gilchrist was able to block it.

With eight minutes remaining, Drexel earned just its second penalty corner of the game, but the Dragons made it count. Mary Lynam took the shot, only the Dragons' fourth of the contest, and scored. Kuhns was able to fire three shots in the final five minutes for the Owls, but her two on target were both saved.

Temple will return to BIG EAST action with a make-up game at #11 Old Dominion, set for Tuesday, Oct. 20 at noon.
