VILLANOVA, Pa. – Temple men's soccer suffered its second loss of the season by a single goal to conference rival USF. The Owls now stand at 0-2 in the conference and 7-2-2 overall.
"The guys really battled," said head coach David MacWilliams. "Jordan Wix-Rauch came in and did a really good job. Dinho Zwane had a really good game. We're now going to have to ask some of these guys to step up and score some goals for us."
The lone goal of the game was served in by USF's Nazeem Bartman in the 14th minute of play. Bartman was able to dribble through Owl defenders and kick one over the goalkeeper to find the back of the net.
The Owls were able to outshoot the Bulls 9-8 and record the same number of shots on goal with four total. One of the most impressive opportunities in the first half for the Owls came from junior Carlos Moros Gracia. The defender took a free kick from the top of the box and served a ball towards the top left corner of the net that just clipped the left post to deflect away.
The second half saw an explosion of goal-scoring opportunities for the Owls.
"In the second half I thought we did a much better job," said MacWilliams. "I thought we had the bigger portion of play the second half."
Freshman Hermann Doerner found a lane at the top of the box to send in a shot that was saved by Bulls' goalkeeper, Spasoje Stefanovic. Junior captain Matt Mahoney hit a dangerous ball in the 67th minute from the right side that also could not get past Stefanovic.
Sophomore Dinho Zwane and freshman Jordan Wix-Rauch also saw close opportunities in the second half.
Goalkeeper Alex Cagle logged three saves to limit the Bulls to only one goal throughout the match. With the help of the Owls' backline, Cagle was also able to clear all three of the Bulls' corner kicks.
"We just have to make sure we get a win the next game and get back on track," said MacWilliams.
The Owls now prepare for another conference matchup, hitting the road to take on UCF on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
