Men's Soccer Hits the Road for Regular Season Finale at #9 SMU
10.30.15 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Temple men's soccer is set to close out its regular season play with a road match Saturday evening against #9 SMU, who sit at the top of the American Athletic Conference standings. The Owls look to find the same momentum they did last weekend, where they came from behind to top Cincinnati 3-1. The match against the Mustangs is set for 9:00 p.m. ET at the team's Westcott Field.
Overall, the Owls have posted a 10-5-2 record and a 2-5-0 record in the conference. The team was undefeated in non-conference matches and suffered only one loss at the Ambler Sports Complex, falling to UConn on Oct. 21. The 10 collective wins in 2015 marks the sixth 10-win season for head coach David MacWilliams and the third in the last four seasons.
The match against Cincinnati saw goals from three Owls. Jorge Gomez Sanchez, Belal Mohamed and Carlos Moros Gracia each logged a goal to secure the Temple victory. Gomez Sanchez's goal was his thirteenth of the season, which currently ranks in a tie for fifth in the Owls' record books for single-season goals and is the most by a single player since 1997.
The SMU Mustangs stand at the top of the conference with an unbeaten record of 6-0-1 and an overall record of 11-2-3. They were ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Top 25 poll, which is their first top 10 ranking since 2010.
Last weekend, the Mustangs drew a match against USF, who also boast an unbeaten conference record of 5-0-2 and were ranked 11th in the weekly poll.
Last season, the Owls and the Mustangs had one meeting that resulted in an SMU win with a score of 2-1. In the overall series, the Mustangs lead 1-0-1.
