Women’s Soccer Tops Cincinnati, 2-1 For First Conference Win
10.8.15 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – After being down 1-0 at the half, the Temple women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to take down American Athletic Conference foe Cincinnati, 2-1 on Thursday. The Owls move to 9-5-0 (1-3-0 The American) on the season.
The Bearcats were first to score after freshman Cassie Wheldon was able to find the net after a corner kick in the 22nd minute of the game.
After the half, the Owls came back in full force on offense as sophomore Elana Falcone powered to get her fifth goal of the season. After a free kick from senior Erin Lafferty and a header from redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto, Falcone was able to head the ball into the net in the 56th minute.
DiTaranto scored the game-winning goal for Temple in the 70th minute of the game. After freshman Sarah McGlinn's previous shot was blocked, DiTaranto was able to gather the ball and send it into the net for her second goal of the season.
After three straight conference road losses, head coach Seamus O'Connor didn't want the fact that his squad was down at halftime to keep them down for the rest of the game.
"We turned it around in the second half by being honest, that's just how we run our program. I went in at halftime and said there's no shame in being down one-nil to Cincinnati," said O'Connor. "We changed the formation at the start and it didn't work for us so we flipped it half an hour into the game and the last 15 minutes of the first half were great. A lot of the halftime talk was about if we repeat the last 15 minutes, we're absolutely good."
The Owls will return to Ambler on Sunday as they host East Carolina in another American Athletic Conference contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
