Matthews, Mason Advance to Second Stage of Q School

10.9.15 | Men's Golf

PHILADELPHIA – It was a great week for Temple golf. Senior All-American Brandon Matthews and 2011 alum Andrew Mason both advanced to the second stage of the very competitive PGA Tour Q-School.

Matthews, the only amateur among 77 golfers at his site, shot a three-under 69 Friday to finished with a four-round total of 11-under to tie for 14th overall.  The DuPont, Pa. native played at the Callaway Gardens-Mountain View Golf Course in Pine Mountain Ga.

"I feel great," said Matthews.  "This is the first time I really competed against this type of competition and I think I did well.  I still need to improve on the putting aspect of my game to shoot even better numbers. I am really happy with the way I played though and I feel like I belong."

Mason, who played the ArborLinks in Nebraska City, Neb., had the best round of the day at his site, shooting a blistering eight-under 64 to finish with a 14-under to place fifth among 73 finishers.

"I think played solid golf all week," said Mason. "I hit all 18 greens today and putted well. I hit it well all week and played conservative golf. I am excited to get ready for the next stage in a month."

Mason advanced to second stage for the first time in his career.  He failed to advance in his first attempt in 2014.

Mason and Matthews have both won the Philadelphia Open twice in their young careers.  Mason won the prestigious local championship in 2011 and 2012 while Matthews took the title in 2013 and 2015.

The Temple duo will next play in November with the site and date to be determined at the end of the October.
