News & Notes Following Temple's 60-40 win at SMU
Temple now has an 8-1 record, the best start since also being 8-1 in 1973 (when they finished 9-1) and the most wins since 2011 (9).
The 60 points was the most since a 63-point output on 11/17/12 at Army (63-32 win). It was just the third time in the Modern Era (since 1971) that they eclipsed the 60-point plateau (a 63-34 win at Holy Cross in 1973).
The offense posted a season high 536 yards of offense. It was the most since the last time they visited SMU (10/26/13 posting 593 total yards).
Temple didn't turn over the ball for the second time in three weeks. It was just the fourth time all season that Temple won the turnover battle but the third time in as many weeks.
Temple had eight different players score a TD – QB P.J. Walker, and RBs Jager Gardner and Jahad Thomas (rushing), WRs Robby Anderson, Ventell Bryant, Romond Deloatch, and Adonis Jennings (receiving), and CB Sean Chandler (INT return). WR John Christopher also chipped in with a two-point conversion and PK Austin Jones was perfect on 7 PATs and a 34-yard FG.
True freshman RB Jager Gardner made his first career start (in place of an injured Jahad Thomas) and made the most of it. On the games second play he broke through the right side of the line and raced 94 yards for his first career TD. It was the longest rushing play i and the second longest play from scrimmage in Temple history (In 1985, Lee Saltz threw a 96-yard TD to Keith Gloster). Overall, Gardner finished with his first career 100-yard rushing day (6-110-1TD).
Junior QB P.J. Walker led the Owls to a 60-40 win at SMU on 18 of 25 passing for 268 yards and a career-high 4 TD passes. In addition, he rushed 7 times for 49 yards and sealed the victory with a 36-yard rushing TD with 1:45 remaining to extend what was just a five point lead at the time. Walker connected with 10 different pass catchers and threw TDs to four different receivers.
Sophomore CB Sean Chandler made plays behind the line of scrimmage and deep in coverage throughout the night at SMU. Overall he had seven stops, 2.0 tackles for loss. But it was his 41-yard interception return for a TD that cemented the 60-40 victory with 0:55 remaining.
The Avengers
Entering the season, the Owls had a chance to avenge recent losses to six schools and have made good on four of those five chances thus far.
