Free-Throw Shooting Lifts Men's Basketball Over Delaware State, 78-63
12.19.15 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - With a 12-of-15 performance at the free throw line, senior Quenton DeCosey finished with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Temple men's basketball to a 78-63 win against visiting Delaware State on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 5-5 prior to their first American Athletic Conference contest of the season, set for Dec. 29 at Cincinnati.
As a team, Temple hit a season-high 30 free throws and shot 78.9 percent at the stripe. Junior guard Josh Brown hit all eight of his free-throw attempts and scored 14 points to go with a team-high four assists.
The first half was a struggle for the Owls until they found a rhythm on offense down the stretch. Temple's slow start allowed Delaware State to lead by as many seven in the first five minutes, but the Owls used a 10-2 run to take a 13-12 lead at the 12-minute mark.
The Hornets continued to be more efficient on offense despite Temple gaining a huge edge on the glass. Delaware State still led by a point, 24-23 with less than five minutes to go in the first half. From there, the Owls closed the half on a 12-3 run.
Freshman Trey Lowe began the run with a three-pointer followed by a steal and a dunk, and a pair of free throws for junior Mark Williams were the final points of the half at 1:13. Temple took a 35-27 lead into the break, led by DeCosey with eight points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore Obi Enechionyia hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and give Temple its largest lead to that point at 38-27, but it was short-lived.
Sparked by six points from DeAndre Haywood, Delaware State used a 10-1 run to cut Temple's lead to just two, 39-37 just over three and a half minutes into the second period. The Owls regained control quickly, using a 12-2 run of their own to take a 14-point, 55-41 lead.
The Hornets twice cut their deficit back to eight points, but could come no closer. Over the final six minutes, Temple outscored Delaware State 20-12 to remain comfortably in the lead. Despite trailing by at least 13 in the final three minutes, the Hornets sent Brown to the line twice in the final 20 seconds. He made all four attempts to remain perfect for the game.
Haywood finished with a game-high 21 points to lead Delaware State (0-11), while three other players also scored in double figures for the Hornets.
Temple will take 10 days off before beginning its American Athletic Conference schedule on the road at Cincinnati. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29 (ESPN2 / 1210 AM WPHT).
