PHILADELPHIA- The women's tennis team completed their weekend with a 5-2 victory over Albany to keep their winning streak alive at five consecutive matches.
Head coach Steve Mauro was happy with the way the team performed this weekend against tough opponents.
"It was a good win today for the girls, especially coming off a win against a tough Binghamton team. So, it was nice to win back-to-back matches," said Mauro.
In doubles, the Owls were quick to take the 1-0 lead, as partners Alina Abdurakhimova and Yana Khon won a 6-3 set at the first flight. To clinch the point, Monet Stuckey-Willis and Anais Nussaume won the second flight, 6-4.
It was another quick round in singles as well, with the first, second, and third flights all coming up strong. Abdurakhimova once again showed her talents at the first flight, taking her seventh consecutive straight-set victory, 7-6(1), 6-1. Just like her doubles partner, Khon was able to help the Owls clinch a 2-0 lead taking a 6-3, 6-4 set at the third flight.
Sophomore Dina Karina brought the score to 3-0 with a hard fought battle at the second flight, which came down to a close tiebreaker, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5). Freshman Monet Stuckey-Willis followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 fifth flight to help the Owls take the victory.
Mauro has noticed that the girls are playing extremely well and hopes that they continue with their winning ways.
"It was another strong performance in doubles and singles. The team is really united and playing at a high level, so we hope to keep this streak going."
The Owls (7-2) will travel to Ohio to take on Dayton on February 20 at 12:00 p.m. and face their first American Athletic Conference opponent when they visit Cincinnati on February 21 at 12:00 p.m.
