Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten With a 9-7 Win at La Salle

2.18.15 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Proving how many offensive weapons it has this season, Temple lacrosse got nine goals from nine different players in a 9-7 win at La Salle on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls remain undefeated at 3-0 to start the 2015 season, while the Explorers now stand at 1-1.

"I'm thrilled that we're seeing offensive production out of so many different people and not relying on just one or two goal-scorers," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "It's a really nice representation of what we're trying to do. We need to figure out how to put a few more than nine goals in the net, but this kind of depth is exactly what we're hoping for and makes us much stronger."

After finding themselves having to answer La Salle goals for the first 40 minutes of the game, the Owls held the Explorers scoreless over the final 20 minutes while scoring three goals to come from behind and take the lead for good.

"We played that one-goal back-and-forth game the whole first half, and I knew it was going to be a battle," said Rosen. "The difference came down to our defenders, who came together and played really strong team defense that allowed us to get ahead by two. Then they came up with a big stop and we were able to stall out the clock. The past few games have really prepared us to play in tight games and not freak out."

It was the Owls' first win in regulation, which Rosen understandably called a "relief" after Temple began the season with two one-goal overtime wins.

Free-position opportunities proved extremely valuable, as Temple earned six chances and converted on four of them, while La Salle did not earn a single one.

Freshman Nicole Barretta was the lone player to finish with two points in the win for Temple, scoring her fifth goal of the season while also adding an assist. Junior Maddie McTigue was key for the Owls defensively with a team-high three caused turnovers and a team-high three ground balls.

La Salle scored the first two goals of the game in the opening six minutes, but Macie Hauck and Megan Pinkerton scored within 30 seconds of each other to tie the game at 2-2 just over seven minutes in. It would be the first of six ties in a back-and-forth contest that saw Temple come up with an answer for every goal by the Explorers.

Nicole Tiernan's goal on a free position with 1:30 left in the first half was the final goal of the period, sending the game to halftime tied at 4-4. After ties at 5-5 and 6-6, La Salle scored its final goal with 22:55 remaining for a 7-6 lead.

Temple's third free position goal came from Avery Longstaff just past the 20-minute mark to tie the game at 7-7, and Kathryn Skahan gave the Owls their first lead on a free position goal two minutes later.

Scoring her fifth goal of the season, Carly Demato gave Temple a two-goal cushion with 13:06 left. Two of La Salle's three shots in the remaining time went wide, while the third was saved by Jaqi Kakalecik who finished with six saves in the win.

Temple will look to keep its streak going on Saturday, Feb. 21 when the Owls host Cornell at 1:00 p.m. at Geasey Field.
