Larry Dougherty to be Inducted Into CoSIDA Hall of Fame

PHILADELPHIA - Six current and one former sports communications professionals will be inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame on June 15, including Temple Senior Associate AD/Communications and CoSIDA past president Larry Dougherty. This CoSIDA Hall of Fame honor is presented to members of CoSIDA who have made outstanding contributions to the field of college athletic communications.
 
Dougherty is joined by university representatives Paul Just, Sports Information Emeritus/Historian at Western Kentucky University, and Kenny Klein, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations at the University of Louisville. The college representatives are Anne Abicht, Sports Information Director at St. Cloud State University; Bob Nygaard, Sports Information Director at University of Minnesota Duluth; and Sheila Stevenson, Sports Information Director at Rowan University.

George Gallet, the late and former longtime Director of Sports Information at the University of Miami. was selected as a member of the 2015 Hall of Fame class by the Veterans Selection Committee. The other six were selected by a vote of more than 70 CoSIDA Hall of Famers.

Dougherty will be the second CoSIDA Hall of Fame inductee from Temple. Longtime Sports Information Director and current Special Assistant to the Athletic Director Al Shrier was inducted in 1995. Dougherty is also the sixth inductee from a Philadelphia Big 5 school along with Shrier, three from Penn (Joseph T. Labrum, Bob Paul, Herb Hardnett) and one (Lawrence Fan) from La Salle. 

"This is a tremendous honor to join a select group of our top professionals in the CoSIDA Hall of Fame," said Dougherty. "I am truly humbled. I would be remiss not to thank my good friend and mentor Al Shrier for nominating me for this honor, and also my father, who has been my inspiration in not just my career, but in life."

Dougherty is in his 12th year at Temple and fourth as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications after serving the previous four years as Associate Athletic Director. In his position, Dougherty oversees the athletic communications and publications of the University's 19-sport Division I-A athletic program as well as the television and radio operations. He also is the varsity sport administrator for men's and women's soccer.

Dougherty joined the Owls' staff after serving 15 years in the media relations office at Saint Joseph's, the last eight as the school's assistant athletic director for media relations. Prior to SJU, he served as the SID at Nicholls State for one year and as the sports information director of the East Coast Conference for two years. 

Active in regional and national organizations, Dougherty served as chair of the organizing committee for the 2009 ECAC-SIDA Workshop held in Avalon, N.J., and the 2005 CoSIDA Workshop held in Philadelphia. Dougherty served as the president of CoSIDA during 2010-11. He was the recipient of the ECAC-SIDA's 2011 Irving T. Marsh Award.

He earned both his bachelor's (1982) and executive MBA (1994) degrees from Saint Joseph's. His father, Andy, also served as the SID at SJU from 1972-81.
