Women's Basketball Heads to New Orleans for Clash with Tulane

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team heads to New Orleans for a Saturday clash at Tulane at 12 p.m. The Owls enter the game with a 7-3 mark in The American, 11-12 overall, while Tulane, which joined the American Athletic Conference this season, is 8-3 in conference play, 17-5 overall. The match-up features a pair of top-four teams in The American.

Temple has won four out of its last five games, with the only setback coming against No. 2/2 UConn. Most recently, Temple defeated Memphis, 84-61, at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday. The rout of Memphis saw Temple drain a program-record 15 three pointers in front of 2,814 fans on hand for the "School Day" matinee. Freshman Alliya Butts scored a career-high 30 points, while senior Tyonna Williams recorded a career-best seven threes with 25 total points. Butts and Williams led Temple to 51.7% shooting from beyond-the-arc, and the new program record, topping Temple's previous best of 14 threes, set on January 29, 2011 in an 84-56 win over Richmond. 

Also against Memphis, freshman Tanaya Atkinson recorded her fourth-career double-double, notching 15 points and 15 rebounds, while junior Erica Covile had eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the win. Junior Mama Traore also had a career-day, pulling down a college-high of eight rebounds. 

Five players average in double-digits in scoring for Temple, led by Butts' 12.1 points per game. She also avearges a team-best 2.1 steals per outing. Fitzgerald averages 11.6 points and 2.6 assists per game, while puts up 11.1 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game. Atkinson is fourth on Temple in scoring (10.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.0 rpg). Rounding out the individual leaders, Williams averages 10.3 points and a team-best 3.0 assists per game. 

Temple is a 35.9% shooting team, but the Owls have shot over 40% in three out of their last four games. At the charity stripe, the Owls connect on 70.2% of attempts and also make 32.3% of shots from three-point range. Temple is out-scoring opponents, 66.7 to 66.1, while rebounds are even on the season, averaging and giving up 41.6 per game.  and out-scored by slim margins, 41.8-41.6 on the glass, and 66.4-66.0 in points. In conference play, Temple is out-scoring opponents by nearly five points, but are being out-rebounded by three boards per outing.

The Green Wave are coming off a 24-point win at SMU, topping the Mustangs, 84-60. Against SMU, four Green Wave players scored in double figures, led by Kolby Morgan's 18 points. The Green finished with a season best .574 shooting percentage, connecting on 8-of-18 from beyond the arc. Morgan added to her night with a team-best four steals, while Dale followed with 12 points, including a 6-for-8 day from the free throw line. The senior grabbed a team high six rebounds and tied her career high of four assists. Chinwe Duru and Courtnie Latham rounded out the players in double figures, each contributing 11 points tonight.

Tulane is led by Morgan's 12.3 points per game, and 49 total steals, while Danielle Blagg (9.7 ppg) and Leslie Vorpahl (8.0 ppg) also contribute to the offense. The Green Wave have a deep bench, with nine different players contributing at least 4.2 points per outing. On the boards, Tulane has four players averaging better than 4.0 rebounds per game, led by Tiffany Dale's 5.8. 

Tulane shoots 42% from the field and 30.9% from three-point range. The Green Wave are out-scoring opponents by nearly 11 points per game and out-rebounding opponents by two boards per contest. Tulane's numbers are similiar in 11 conference games, but are being out-rebounded by a slim margin against American Athletic Conference opponents. 

Saturday's clash will be the second meeting between the programs. Temple and Tulane met on December 28, 2008, with the Owls picking up a 75-71 overtime victory on the road in head coach Tonya Cardoza's first season at the helm of the program.
