Lacrosse Takes Down #19 Delaware 11-6 to Improve to 8-1 Overall
3.14.15 | Women's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. - Taking an early lead and never relinquishing it, Temple lacrosse ultimately beat #19 Delaware 11-6 to improve to 8-1 overall. It was the fifth straight win for the Owls, who are off to their best start in 18 years.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper and reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Jaqi Kakalecik made a career-high 13 saves, and Temple got its fifth hat trick of the season from junior Nicole Tiernan who scored three goals. Juniors Megan Tiernan and Kathryn Skahan scored two goals apiece, with the pair combining for the Owls' first three goals in a 3-0 run to open the game.
Kakalecik added an impressive six ground balls and three caused turnovers to her career numbers in the win.
"The defense and Jaqi were just phenomenal today," said Temple head coach Bonnie Rosen. "She was outstanding and really just stifling in the cage for us, and also key in her ability outside the cage to get ground balls, control our clears and really set the tone for the whole team."
Skahan's second goal at 24:37 of the first half put the Owls up 3-0, and Nicole Tiernan would add two of her three before halftime. Delaware came within a goal at 4-3, but Tiernan and Kirstie Connor each scored to put Temple up 6-3 at the break.
"It was a battle, but we established control early in terms of the way we were playing," said Rosen. "For the first time this season, we took a lead and never looked back. We got better through the game and I would say this was the best overall team game we've played this year."
In the second half, Temple never let Delaware come within fewer than three after scoring the first goal less than two minutes in. With 18:37 remaining, sophomore Morgan Glassford scored the first of what would be three straight goals to really put the game away. She also assisted on the final goal in the run by Avery Longstaff, and Rosen praised Glassford's play as a standout performance in the win.
"Morgan was instrumental all over the field," said Rosen. "She was getting ground balls, draws and scoring and just did a really nice job to solidify the win for us today."
Temple has one non-conference game remaining, and will host Denver at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
