PHILADELPHIA – The men's tennis team picked up their first conference win of the season as they took down UConn, 6-1.
"It was nice to get a win against a conference opponent," said head coach Steve Mauro. "In doubles, the guys played really strong, especially at flights two and three. We had a new combination of Ondre Cargill and Ian Glessing. We're really happy that we put them together because they played great doubles. It will be good to have them in the future."
In doubles, Santiago Canete and Vineet Naran picked up a 6-4 victory at the second flight over Andrew Ginzberg and Zac McEntee. Cargill and Glessing found victory at the third flight, as they defeated Joshua Palmer and Jonathan Edwards at the third flight, 6-2.
The Owls moved on to singles and never looked back, taking five of their six flights for the victory. Mauro was impressed with the way that the guys came out and handled their singles matches.
"In singles, everyone played really strong together," said Mauro. "Especially Canete at flight one. He played a strong opponent and won pretty easily."
Against Jacob Spreyer, Canete picked up his 17th overall win on the season in a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the first flight. Nicolas Paulus picked up his 49th career singles victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the second flight over McEntee; Paulus is now just two victories away from tying Kacper Rams for fourth most career singles wins since 2001.
Temple also picked up wins at the fourth flight, where Naran defeated Peter Surovic, 6-1, 6-1, along with a battling win from Filip Stipcic at the fifth flight over Ginzberg, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. The Owls rounded out the match with Glessing taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the sixth flight over Palmer.
The Owls (11-8, 1-2 The American) will travel to Annapolis, Md. on April 4 to take on Navy.
