Matthews Shoots 68 to Lead Princeton Invitational After Day One

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa.  - There is arguably no collegiate golfer hotter than Temple University junior Brandon Matthews.  The DuPont, Pa. native, who has won his last two tournaments, sat atop the leaderboard Saturday following a two-under 68 at the Princeton Invitational.  The first round was held at the par 70, 6970-yard Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa.

The second and final round of the tournament will be held  Sunday at Merion Golf Club's  East Course in Ardmore, Pa. 

Matthews, who is the 39th ranked collegiate golfer by GolfStat.com, recorded four birdies, two on the front nine and two on the back nine, to go along with two bogeys.

Cornell's Mike Grayboyes is one stroke behind Matthews with a 69 while Yale's Thomas Greenhalgh and Penn's Ben Cooley are two shots back with an even par 70.

Temple was 15-over as a team and in second place, four shots behind Yale (291).  Penn was third (296) followed by Seton Hall (297), Georgetown (298), Dartmouth (299), Rutgers (301), St. John's (301), Cornell (302), Princeton (304), Saint Joseph's (305), Brown (310) and Rider (315).

Senior Matt Teesdale was next for Temple, carding a three-over 73 to tie for 15th place.   Freshman Evan Thornton shot a six-over 76, tying for 29th while senior Pat Ross (78/40th) and sophomore Evan Notaro (79/50th place) rounded out the team.
