4.11.15 | Men's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – The men's tennis team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3.
"It was a great way to finish the regular season, the guys have been playing really well towards the end of the season," said head coach Steve Mauro.
The team started off slow, dropping the doubles point. Hicham Belkssir and Nicolas Paulus lost at the first flight to Arvis Berzins and Jacob Whalley, 6-0, but Santiago Canete and Vineet Naran came back to take a 6-2 second flight victory over Arnaud Valentin and Gonzalo Quintana. The Knights ended up taking the point, after Adam Chan and Diogo Garnel defeated Ian Glessing and Ondre Cargill, 6-4 at the third flight.
However, the Owls came back strong in singles. After Chan defeated Belkssir at the third flight, 6-2, 7-5(5), the Owls won four straight flights to clinch the victory. Paulus picked up his 51st career victory on a 6-2, 6-2 win at the second flight over Whalley, while freshman Stephen Ong won at the sixth flight over Valentin, 6-4, 6-4. Naran recorded a win at the fourth flight, defeating Quintana, 6-4, 6-3 and Filip Stipcic sealed the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fifth flight over Garnel.
Mauro was pleased with the way the team performed today and is excited for the matches to come in the next few days.
"I was really happy today for Ong who started in sixth and recorded the victory," said Mauro. "All of the guys have been performing well and we're all excited about the upcoming conference tournament in Tulsa. So overall, I've been happy with the way the season has gone."
The Owls (14-9, 1-2 The American) will travel to Tulsa for the American Athletic Conference Championship on April 16-19. Seeding for the championship will be announced next week.
