Lacrosse Gets Past Marquette 11-7 for a BIG EAST Victory

4.11.15 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA - Three players recorded hat tricks to lead Temple lacrosse to an 11-7 BIG EAST Conference win against Marquette on Saturday afternoon, led by freshman Nicole Barretta with three goals and two assists. The win was the Owls' first conference victory, snapping a three-game losing streak, and brings them to 9-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Barretta scored all three of her goals on her three free position opportunities, and also assisted on back-to-back goals late in the second half that helped Temple put the game away. Also recording hat tricks were sophomore Morgan Glassford and junior Nicole Tiernan with three goals apiece.

Defensively, senior Carli Fitzgerald had a strong game for Temple with six ground balls and three caused turnovers, limiting opportunities for the Golden Eagles all afternoon.

It took Temple awhile to get going early on, as Marquette scored the game's first two goals, but once the Owls began scoring, they pulled away quickly.

Glassford's first goal was the Owls' first of the game at 21:26 of the first half, and began a 7-0 Temple run that ended with a 7-2 lead at the 6:45 mark of the half. Barretta scored two of her goals in the run, as did Nicole Tiernan and Glassford.

Junior Summer Jaros made a great play during the run with 12:13 left in the half, picking up a ground ball and scoring after a blocked free position attempt for the Owls.

Marquette's Hayley Baas, who led her team with three goals, scored the final goal of the first half and the first goal of the second half for the Golden Eagles. Temple had a 7-3 lead at the break, but Baas and Emily Donovan cut the Owls' lead to two goals less than seven minutes into the second half.

The Golden Eagles (4-10, 0-4) once again cut the margin to two after Barretta's third goal midway through the half, but the Owls rattled off three straight in the final 10 minutes to regain a comfortable lead, starting with a Rachel Schwaab goal at 7:56.

Temple goalkeeper Jaqi Kakalecik made six saves in the win while also picking up three ground balls.

The win was an extra-special one for Temple, as the Owls had their Friends of Jaclyn adopted sister Lily Adkins on the sidelines and with them for the day. Lily's parents, Temple alums Trish and Mike, spoke to the crowd at halftime about FOJ and what being a part of the Temple Lacrosse family has meant to them over the last five years. Below is a photo of the Adkins Family with the team.

The Owls' next game is their final home game of the season, and they will honor four seniors for Senior Day as they host city and BIG EAST rival Villanova at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
