PHILADELPHIA - Two late goals gave Temple lacrosse momentum, but the Owls were unable to complete the comeback and lost 9-7 to Villanova (8-6, 3-2) in a BIG EAST contest on Wednesday afternoon. It was the final home game of the season for Temple (9-5, 1-4), and the Owls honored their four seniors prior to the game for Senior Day.
Junior Rachel Schwaab and sophomore Morgan Glassford each scored a pair of goals for Temple, while Schwaab also recorded an assist for three total points.
Jackie Froccaro and Meghan Breen both notched hat tricks for the Wildcats, with Froccaro scoring four goals and two assists, and Breen adding three goals.Â
Villanova struck first in the game with a goal just over three minutes in, and the 1-0 lead held for close to 20 minutes in a defensive battle. The Owls scored back-to-back goals for a 2-1 lead, but the Wildcats closed the half with two of their own for a 3-2 advantage at the break.
The second-half was a much higher-scoring affair, but it was Villanova with the continued momentum early on. The Wildcats scored four goals in the first 10 minutes for an 8-3 lead, their largest of the game.
Schwaab scored on a free position shot to get the Owls on the board in the second half with 19:02 remaining. Temple would go on to score five of the game's final seven goals, but could not narrow the gap to fewer than two. Two of the Owls' goals were scored with less than three minutes remaining, but after a final goal for Avery Longstaff with 1:09 left, they were unable to get another one past Villanova goalkeeper Jaclyn Fraum.
Temple's final two regular season games will be on the road, starting with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Cincinnati on Sunday, April 19.
