Matthews Captures Princeton Invitational, Ties Temple Mark with 8th Career Win

4.12.15 | Men's Golf

ARDMORE, Pa. - Junior Brandon Matthews remains one of the hottest golfers in college golf as he captured his third straight title with a two-stroke victory at the Princeton Invitational Sunday at the Merion Golf Club.  The DuPont, Pa. native also tied Geoffrey Sisk's (1984-87) record for career wins at Temple with his eighth title in his brilliant career.

Matthews tied senior Matt Teesdale for the best round by an Owl, a one-over 71, at the
6,502-yard East Course, which played host to the 2013 U.S. Open.  He had shot a two-under 68 Saturday at the par-70, 6,970-yard Aronimink Golf Club.

The Owls tied for second with Seton Hall with a two-day total of 586, 15 shots behind team champion Yale (571). Rutgers was fourth (590) followed by Princeton (593), Penn (599), Saint Joseph's (600), St. John's (600), Georgetown (604), Cornell (605), Dartmouth (605), Brown (619) and Rider (620).

Teesdale, who carded a 73 Saturday, tied for ninth overall in the 72-player field with a four-over 144.  Senior Pat Ross rebounded from a 78 Saturday to finish tied for 27th after a three-over 73 at Merion.  Freshman Evan Thornton duplicated his 76 from Saturday to tie for 34th overall while sophomore Evan Notaro (79-81, 16/t-60th) rounded out the TU squad.

Temple next competes at the Wolfpack Spring Intercollegiate on April 18-19.
