Golf Set To Tee Off at 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship

LECANTO, Fla. – Junior Brandon Matthews and the Temple Golf team open play Sunday at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship held at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla. The tournament has been shortened to two days due to expected inclement weather on Tuesday. The teams will play 36 holes on Sunday with the championship concluding Monday with 18 holes.
Play on the par-72, 7,025-yard Quarry Course will begin at 8 a.m. with 18 holes each of the three days. An awards presentation will take place following the final round on Tuesday. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, and live scoring can be found through www.GolfStat.com or on the GolfStat mobile applications.
The event features all 10 American teams, two of which are ranked among the nation's top-50, according to the latest GolfStat rankings announced on April 24. USF is the league's highest-rated team at No. 18 while SMU checks in at No. 29.
Matthews, who has a 70.8 stroke average for the season, is the top-ranked golfer in the conference as well as being tied for 36th nationally heading into this weekend's championship. SMU's Bryson DeChambeau ranks 43rd nationally.
The Mustangs won last year's championship by five strokes over second-place UCF while individual champion DeChambeau carded a seven-under 206 to earn medalist honors.
Besides Matthews, who tied for fourth at last year's conference championship, head coach Brian Quinn's squad includes seniors Matt Teesdale (75.4 spr.) and Pat Ross (75.5 spr.), and freshmen Evan Thornton (77.4 spr.) and Mark Farley (79.0 spr.).
