Men's Tennis Seeded Eighth in American Athletic Conference Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Men's tennis team has been seeded eighth at the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship, held on April 16-19 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus. The Owls will face ninth-seeded UConn at 10 a.m./9 a.m. Central Time on Thursday, April 16.

The men posted an 14-9 record, going a perfect 8-0 in home contests, and 1-2 in conference play. The Owls only conference win was a 6-1 victory over UConn on March 28.

This season, the team was led by juniors Nicolas Paulus (17-14), who posted a 13-8 record at the second flight and picked up his 51st career singles victory in the team's season finale against Fairleigh Dickinson and Santiago Canete (18-16), who went 12-10 at the first flight; both Paulus and Canete had superior performances as sophomores last season. Sophomore Vineet Naran stepped up this season, posting a 16-12 record, with a 13-6 record in dual matches and went 6-3 at the fifth flight. Junior Hicham Belkssir (11-17), junior Maros Januvka (8-1), and sophomore Filip Stipcic (11-17) all competed well during the season.

Newcomers seemed to round out the team, with junior Ian Glessing (7-4), junior Ondre Cargill (5-3), and freshman Stephen Ong (6-3), who as 4-0 in dual matches, all stepping up toward the end of the season.

In doubles, Canete and Naran lead the team with a 7-5 record, all in dual matches and at the second flight. The team played around with partners, adding Glessing and Cargill as a team toward the end of the season, resulting in a 2-2 record.

#19 USF is the number one seed in the nine-team men's bracket and will play at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT Friday against the winner of Temple and UConn. One of those three teams will go on to face the winner of number four SMU and number five Memphis, ranked 44 and 46, respectively in the country, who face off Friday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
 
The number two seed on the men's side is #29 Tulsa, as the Golden Hurricane will duel with number seven East Carolina on Friday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT. The fourth and final quarterfinal will be Friday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT as number three Tulane, ranked 39th in the country, faces number six UCF.
 
Men's semifinals will be contested Saturday at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT, with the championship final beginning at 1 p.m. ET/Noon CT Sunday.
