Women's Tennis Sweeps Thursday Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – A bit of wind didn't keep the women's tennis team from picking up victories in their matches against Philadelphia and Rider on April 2.
"I thought the girls played pretty well today. We expected to win, but anytime you play two matches back-to-back, it's pretty difficult," said head coach Steve Mauro. "I was happy that we got two wins and it's great to play at home, especially since we've been playing a lot on the road. Overall, I was happy with the way the girls performed."
In the first match of the day, Temple shut out Philadelphia, 7-0. The Owls swept the doubles point, with Monet Stuckey-Willis and Rebecca Breland shutting out Sylvia Bennicelli and Carly Ragan at the third flight, 6-0. Alina Abdurakhimova and Dina Karina also registered a 6-0 victory at the first flight over Julia Arruda and Jala Hamada. Mariana Bedon and Minami Okajima also picked up a win at the second flight, taking down the Rams' Emily Chung and Anna Kudriavtceva.
Singles play was a sweep as well for the Owls, with the team winning all six flights in straight-set victories. Stuckey-Willis registered her 16th singles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Kudriavtceva at the second flight, while Breland took down Ragan 6-1, 6-0 at the sixth flight. Bedon and Karina each picked up a win at the fifth and third flights, respectively. Okajima nabbed a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fifth flight, while Abdurakhimova picked up her 13th first flight straight-set victory, defeating Philadelphia's Arruda, 6-4, 6-0.
For their second match, the Owls were resilient and took another 7-0 win against Rider. Once again, the Owls swept the doubles point, all in 6-0 shutouts of Rider. Singles also featured four 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in flights two, three, five, and six by Stuckey-Willis, for her team-leading 17th singles victory of the season, Karina, Bedon, and Breland, respectively. Okajima picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fourth flight against Danielle Scrudato to go 2-0 on the day, while Abdurakhimova defeated Michelle Caravaglio 6-2, 6-0 for her 14th straight-set victory of the season.
The Owls (14-6, 0-4 The American) will have a few days off, but return to the Pavilion on April 7 to take on University of Maryland Eastern Shores at 3 p.m.
