4.24.15 | Women's Rowing

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's rowing team has added five signees to its already strong recruiting class for 2015-16. The Owls welcome Victoria Brooks (Landsdowne, Pa.), Mary Margaret Gresham (Raleigh, N.C.), Ciara O'Sullivan (Upper Darby, Pa.), Danielle Ober (Manheim, Pa.), and Sylvia Porach (Asheville, N.C.).

"We are so excited to welcome Victoria, Mary Margaret, Ciara, Dani and Sylvia to Temple and the women's rowing team," said Alyssa O'Donnell, Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. "These five young women will join our November signees with making the class of 2019 by far the best recruiting class in Temple's history."

Victoria Brooks is a 5-6 rower from Landsdown, Pa. An honor student from Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School, she has been part of crews that finished first at the Philadelphia City Slam, third at the Scholastic Rowing Association of American Championships, and second at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. Brooks is also an accomplished swimmer, having earned All-Delco and All-Catholic honors in the sport. She plans to major in Nursing at Temple.

Mary Margaret Gresham is a 5-7 rower from Raleigh, N.C. She was a participant in the Southeast Juniors Development Camp in 2014, where her boat competed in the varsity eight race at the club national championships. Coming out of Raleigh Charter School and Triangle Rowing Club, she has won the Hammer Award as the fastest rower in each of the past two seasons. Gresham, a future Business major at Temple, is a member of the Spanish Club, where she was the state winner for the We The People competition.

Ciara O'Sullivan is a 5-8 rower from nearby Upper Darby, Pa. A National Honor Society member, she is ranked in the top 10% academically at Archbishop Carroll High School. Her rowing experience dates back to freshman year, where she was a part of the first ever crew team at her high school. O'Sullivan's boats have won the Philadelphia Catholic League twice, and have also competed at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, finishing as high as fifth. She plans to pursue a Liberal Arts major at Temple.

Danielle Ober is a 5-9 rower from Manheim, Pa. A product of Manheim Central, she is a three-sport athlete, competing in basketball, soccer, and track and field at the varsity level. Ober was her school's Female Athletic Leadership Representative at the F&M College Athletic Leadership Conference earlier this year and is also a Scholar-Athlete award winner. She is president of Quill and Scroll Honor Society, and a member of the RHO Kappa Honor Society, as well as the Student Television Network Honor Society. Ober plans to major in Special Education with a minor in Media at Temple.

Sylvia Porach is a 5-11 rower from Asheville, N.C. A captain of her high school team at TC Roberson, her boats have placed in the top three in every race this season to date. She attended the Southeast Juniors Development Camp over the summer, competing in club nationals with the crew, and also attended the Junior B National Sculling Camp as a sophomore. Porach, who is the second in her family to accept an athletic scholarship for rowing, is a National Honor Society student as well as a Junior Marshall. She plans to major in Tourism and Hospitality Management at TU.

"We have really been turning up the volume with our recruiting," noted O'Donnell. "These five young women exemplify the type of character and all around student-athlete our program needs to reach new levels of success in the American Athletic Conference and on the national stage. Their futures are bright as Owls and we can't wait for them to write their story."

The current Owls continue their season this weekend on the Schuylkill River, competing for the Kelly Cup City Championship.
