LECANTO, Fla. – Junior Brandon Matthews rebounded from his worst day of the season with a four-under 68 on the final day at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Golf Championship held at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla.
Matthews, who was seven-over after the first two rounds Sunday, had four birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 505-yard 14th hole in tying for the third lowest score of the day. He moved up 11 spot to finish tied for 22nd at the championship with a three-over 219.
"Brandon had been under the weather for about a week before the championship," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn. "Sunday he was not himself for the first time in the three years I have been coaching him, but he rebounded well and had a nice round to close out the tournament."
Senior Pat Ross was next for the Owls, shooting a one-over 73 on the day to tie for 37th overall with a 10-over 226. Freshman Mark Farley, who carded a 77 Monday, was three strokes behind Ross and tied for 41st with a 232. Senior Matt Teesdale, who also had a one-over 73 on the day, tied for 47th overall while freshman Evan Thornton placed 50th following a round of 79.
"It was one of those weeks," said Quinn on the team's finish. "The course has four or five tricky holes and if you are off, like we were, you pay dearly. What was nice was that our two seniors, Matt and Pat, each birdied their final collegiate hole."
As a team, Temple finished 10th overall with a 906. USF won the Championship with an 837, 13 strokes ahead of second-place SMU (850). UCF finished third (856), followed by Houston (866), Memphis (869), Cincinnati (876), East Carolina (881), Tulsa (883), UConn (893) and Temple (906).
UCF's Ryan Fricker finished 11-under with a 205 to win the tournament with SMU's Bryson Dechambeau (207) two strokes behind in second place.
Matthews must now wait to see if he is selected as an individual to compete in the 2015 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Show will be televised live by The Golf Channel at 10:00 am. on Monday, May 4.
