Brandon Matthews Set to Tee Off At NCAA Regionals

5.13.15 | Men's Golf

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Temple junior Brandon Matthews will tee off Thursday at The Course at Yale from hole one at 10:01am in the first of three rounds at the New Haven Regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship.  It will be the first of three days at the Regional with the top five teams, and the top individual not among those teams, advancing to the NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla. on May 29-June 3.

Matthews, who enters play with a Temple school-record 71.0 stroke average, is making his second straight appearance in the NCAAs.  He is the only Owl to ever qualify for the event as an individual.

The Dupont, Pa. native won four tournaments during the 2014-15 season, and placed among the Top 10 in 11 of 12 events this season.  He also won the 2014 Dixie Amateur held in December.

Matthews, named to The American all-conference team, is familiar with The Course at Yale, playing the 6,749-yard, par-70 course twice as a freshman during the 2012-13 campaign.  In his second tournament of his record-setting career, he led the Owls and tied for 15th overall with a two-over par 142 at The McLaughlin (9/15-16, 2012). He then shot a six-over 146 at the Yale Spring Opener on April 6 to lead the team and place seventh overall.

The Course at Yale is recognized globally as an exemplar of early American course design, featuring large and deeply bunkered greens and narrow fairways that challenge golfers at all levels of play. Two of the holes—the 432-yard par-4 fourth and the 238-yard par 3 ninth—have been ranked among the world's 100 most difficult holes.
