Matthews Strong Finish Puts Him Tied For 5th at NCAAs After Day One
5.14.15 | Men's Golf
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Brandon Matthews birdied three of the final seven holes of the day to tie for fifth among the 75 golfers after the opening round of the NCAA Men's Golf Regional hosted by Yale University Thursday.
Matthews, who was two over par after the first nine holes, bogeyed the par four 11th, before finishing with birdies on 12, 16 and 18 to end the day with an even-par 70 at the 6,803-yard The Course at Yale. Â
"It was nice to see my ball-striking be on again, it had been off for a while," said Matthews, who made 16 of 18 greens in regulation. "We really figured something good out yesterday on the range and toward the end of the (practice) round so that was nice to see. Â We just need to get a few more putts rolling in."
"I thought he played beautifully all day, hit the ball fantastic today," said Temple coach Brian Quinn. "He kind of struggled on the greens putting, gave himself a bunch of opportunities just nothing went in, but he did close really nice, birdying two of the last three."
Matthews is one of seven players tied in the fifth slot, six strokes behind the overall leader, USF sophomore Rigel Fernandes, who carded a 64. Â Northwestern's Dylan Wu and Ohio State's Clark Engle are tied for second with two-under 68s while Matthias Schwab from Vanderbilt is in fourth place with a one-under 69.
USF leads the 14 competing teams with a one-over 281. Â Ohio State (282) is one shot back while San Diego State, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State round out the top five. Â
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. Â The will be conducted May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. The University of South Florida is the host institution for the 2015 championships.
Play continues Friday with Matthews scheduled tee time at 10:23 from Hole 10. Â
