Matthews Shoots 69 at Day Two of NCAA Regionals To Tie for 5th Overall

5.15.15 | Men's Golf

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Brandon Matthews shot a one-under 69 for the second round of the NCAA Men's Golf Regional hosted by Yale University on Friday which kept him tied for fifth overall at one-under for the three-day tournament.

The Temple golfer needs to be the low individual not on the top five teams to the NCAA finals.  Matthews currently trails Northwestern's Dylan Wu by one stroke for this honor as the top three golfers, Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge (-6), USF's Rigel Fernandes (-5) and Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab (-4), are on teams currently in the top five of the 14 competing teams.

"He struggled a little more out of the gate, but patience is a virtue and he really stayed patient all day," said Temple coach Brian Quinn. "He kind of worked his way into his round, made a few birdies down the stretch.  Sixty-nine today is an amazing score.  The course is playing tough and he is in a really good spot for tomorrow."

"I have put myself in a good position to attack tomorrow," said Matthews. "I am looking to have a nice round (tomorrow). I am looking for everything to come together and I need some putts to fall."

Matthews, who was two over par after the first four holes, evened things on his front nine with birdies on holes 16 and 18.  The Dupont, Pa. native bogeyed hole 2, his 11th of the day, before driving one 400 yards off the tee two holes later to set up a nice birdy. He then used his drive off the seventh hole to set up his final birdy of the day.

Matthews is one of seven players out of the field of 75 golfers under par following the first two days.

USF leads the 14 competing teams with a three-under 557.  North Carolina State (566) is next followed by San Diego State (567), Vanderbilt (567) and Oklahoma State (570).  Niebrugge, the overall leader, set a new course record with an eight-under 62 today.

Play concludes Saturday with Matthews scheduled tee time at 9:53 from Hole 10.
