Matthews Shoots 70 on Final Day of NCAA Regionals to Finish 15th Overall
5.16.15 | Men's Golf
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Brandon Matthews carded an even-par 70 on the final day of competition at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional hosted by Yale University, but his one-under par for the tournament fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
"Brandon finished today just like he started the first round of the season," said Temple coach Brian Quinn. Â "He played beautifully all day, unfortunately he missed a bunch of opportunities. It was a 62 or 63 round he had the possibility of if some of the putts fell. Â Unfortunately it just was not his day."
Matthews finished 15th overall out of the 75 competitors after rounds of 70-69-70 for a 209 on The Course at Yale. Â He was three shots behind Tolvier Dozier of Troy and Addison Coll of Ohio State, who tied for the number one individual spot outside of the top five qualifying teams. Â Dozier won the playoff with an eagle on the first playoff hole.
Oklahoma State's Jordan Niebrugge, who shot a course record 62 on Friday, was the individual medalist with a seven-under 203. Â South Florida won the regional with San Diego State, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt and LSU also qualifying for the NCAA Championship.
Matthews opened and closed his round with bogeys, while parring holes 12 and 18 on his front nine. Â He had several putts for birdie fall short, including one for an eagle on the 18th.
"I had 13 birdie putts inside 12 feet, may have actually have been 14," said Matthews. "That is the way it goes sometimes. Â I just have to work really hard on my putting and have a good summer."
The Dupont, Pa. native closes his record-setting junior season with a 70.9 stroke average, the best in program history.Â
