Matthews, Ross Team Up at 2015 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship
5.2.15 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO - Junior Brandon Matthews and senior Pat Ross are competing at the 2015 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship which starts today (May 2) at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. The championship is open to sides of amateur golfers who have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 5.4 under the USGA Handicap System™.
A starting field of 128 sides (256 golfers) will compete at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. Following two 18-hole stroke-play qualifying rounds on May 2 and 3, the field will be cut to the low 32 sides for match play. Five 18-hole rounds of match play will determine the champion.
In Four-Ball, each team or side is comprised of two players – although one player can constitute a team – and unlike foursomes (alternate shot) they each play their own ball and the lower score among the side is counted for each hole. So if Player A scores a 5 and Player B scores a 4, the side's score is a 4.
Matthews compiled a school-record 71.0 stroke average and won four tournaments during the 2014-15 season while Ross, in his first season with the Owls after transferring from Hartford, posted four Top 20 finishes and a 75.5 stroke average to place second on the team.
Matthews and Ross qualified for the Championship by combining to shoot a low round of 61 on September 30, 2014 at the Westmoreland Country Club in Export, Pa.Â
The Temple duo will tee-off at the 1:00 pm ET Saturday against the team of Will Doughtie and Luke Kane at hole number one on the  6,761 yards, par-70 Ocean Course.
