Four Temple Teams Recognized by NCAA for Multi-Year Academic Performance Rate

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year academic performance rate (APR). On Wednesday, the NCAA announced that four of Temple University's athletic programs are among the teams honored. Men's tennis is being honored for a second straight year, while men's cross country, women's rowing and women's tennis are also receiving recognition.

"To have four of our teams recognized for academic performance speaks volumes to the overall success of Temple University student-athletes in the classroom," said Temple's Director of Athletics Pat Kraft. "This announcement comes on the heels of our record-setting 3.20 combined GPA for all student-athletes in the spring semester.  I applaud the fine work not only by our young men and women who wear the Cherry and White, but to our exceptional academic support staff led by Justin Miller and our coaches, who have worked hard to instill the true meaning of student-athlete with their teams."

In the American Athletic Conference, Temple ties for second with its four recognized teams. Only Tulane with six teams has more than Temple, Cincinnati and USF.

The APR announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams who demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APR's within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APR's in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

For Temple, the recognition follows last week's announcement of the University's student-athletes shattering their former record and combining for a truly impressive cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 for the spring 2015 semester. It marked the third semester in a row in which Temple's student-athletes have raised the bar with their performance in the classroom.

Nearly 67 percent of all Temple student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or greater for the spring, with 11 of 19 sport teams having 70 percent or more of their rosters earning a 3.0 or above. In all, 16 of 19 teams earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or greater. The field hockey and women's soccer teams led the way with team GPA's of 3.57, followed closely by lacrosse at 3.56 and volleyball at 3.55.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Full APRs for all teams will be released May 27. The 1,124 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 696 women's teams and 428 men's or mixed squads, the highest ever in the decade since the NCAA began the Public Recognition Awards program. In 2014, 1,049 teams were recognized, marking an increase this year of 75 teams.

The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. This year, a record 953 teams earned public recognition with a perfect APR score.
