Blanca Fernandez to Compete at NCAA East Preliminary Meet

PHILADELPHIA - Blanca Fernandez has earned a spot to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary meet with the goal of qualifying for the NCAA Final Track and Field Championships. The East Division of the preliminary championships will be held May 28-30 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
"Blanca is very excited about all of the things she has accomplished this year as we are for her," said head coach Elvis Forde. "This is a big accomplishment for Blanca and we are looking forward to watching her compete at an elite level next weekend. It is great not only for her, but also for our program as a whole here at Temple."
Fernandez will represent Temple track and field in the 1,500m run with her 13th-ranked time in the East Division of 4:19.14. On Thursday, May 28 Fernandez will run in the first round and with a qualifying time, she will compete in the quarterfinals on May 30. In order to qualify for the final championships, Fernandez has to place in the top 12 of the quarterfinals race.
"She's earned this opportunity through hard work and consistent training," said assistant coach James Snyder. "Her goal is to extend the season two more weeks and qualify for the NCAA final in June in Oregon."
Fernandez is coming off of a strong showing at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships where she was a conference champion in the 1,500m run with her first-place time of 4:28.97. She also earned a fifth-place finish at the event with her 17:16.76 performance in the 5,000m run.
The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore. from June 10-13.
