JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Blanca Fernandez has qualified for the 2015 Division I NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships following her performance on the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary meet Saturday evening. In the quarterfinals of the 1,500m run, Fernandez finished 11th overall with a time of 4:19.86, outpacing her mark from Thursday's opening round and breaking her own school record time of 4:21.61.

"Blanca is a very smart competitor and that is how she continues to advance in these championship races admist challenges like today's heat and humidity here in Jacksonville," said head coach Elvis Forde. "Blanca did what she was supposed to do today to qualify for the championships."

Fernandez competed in the mile at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in March, and was the first Temple women's track and field athlete to qualify for the national meet in 28 years.

"A lot of credit goes to coach James Snyder who has been doing a fantastic job with Blanca," said Forde. "The expectations for her in two weeks isn't just to compete in the final championships, but to get to the final round. We have all the optimism in the world for her to continue her success that she has had all season."

The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore. from June 10-13.
