Brandon Matthews Selected To Compete at NCAA Men's Golf Championships

PHILADELPHIA - Temple junior golfer Brandon Matthews has been selected to compete as an individual at the 2015 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, it was announced today by the NCAA Men's Golf Committee.

Matthews, who became the first-ever Temple golfer selected to compete at the NCAA Championships last year, is the top individual qualifier at the New Haven Regional hosted by Yale.

"I am really happy to get a chance to continue playing college golf this year in the NCAA Regionals," said Matthews.  "I have worked really hard this year, and had a great spring.  Everything about my game is really starting to come together.  Hopefully I will be able to play well next week and advance to NCAA Championship Finals in Bradenton."

The Dupont, Pa. native compiled a school-record 71.0 stroke per round average during the 2014-15 season while winning four tournament titles.  He also tied the school-record for career tournament titles, matching Geoffrey Sisk's mark of eight set back in 1986.  Twelve of his 30 rounds were below 70 and he placed among the Top 10 in 11 of 12 tournaments.

"This is a great honor for Brandon and I know he looks forward to competing at the highest level," said Temple head coach Brian Quinn.

Matthews, who also won the 2014 Dixie Amateur, is familiar with The Course at Yale, playing the 6,749-yard, par-70 course twice as a freshman during the 2012-13 campaign.  In his second tournament of his record-setting career, he led the Owls and tied for 15th overall with a two-over par 142 at The McLaughlin (9/15-16, 2012). He then shot a six-over 146 at the Yale Spring Opener on April 6 to lead the team and place seventh overall.

The Course at Yale is recognized globally as an exemplar of early American course design, featuring large and deeply bunkered greens and narrow fairways that challenge golfers at all levels of play. Two of the holes—the 432-yard par-4 fourth and the 238-yard par 3 ninth—have been ranked among the world's 100 most difficult holes.

There will be a practice round for the 14-competing teams and the five individual golfers on May 13 with play getting underway with the first of three days of competition on May 14.

The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.  The will be conducted May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida. The University of South Florida is the host institution for the 2015 championships.
