11 Temple Owls Make Phil Steele's All-American Athletic Conference Teams
6.3.15 | Football, T. Matakevich - All-American Candidate, Kyle Friend - All-American Candidate
PHILADELPHIA – Phil Steele Publications, one of the most recognized in college football coverage, announced its 2015 Preseason All-Conference Teams and 11 Temple Owls made the list. In addition, senior linebacker Tyler Matakevich earned a spot on Steele's Preseason All-American Team.
Eight returning starters from the 2014 defense that ranked fourth in the nation in fewest points allowed, were selected to the All-American Athletic Conference team. Joining Matakevich with first team honors was redshirt-junior DL Praise Martin-Oguike. Earning second team honors were a quartet of seniors: DL Matt Ioannidis, DL Hershey Walton, LB Nate D. Smith, and DB Tavon Young. Sophomore DB Sean Chandler earned a spot on the third team and senior DB Alex Wells on the fourth team.
The offense was represented by senior OL Kyle Friend who earned second team recognition and redshirt-junior TE Colin Thompson who found a spot on the fourth team.
Redshirt junior WR Samuel Benjamin was recognized with a spot as a punt returner on the fourth team.
Steele's Preseason All-American Teams had an overwhelming collection of players from Power 5 conferences. Matakevich, who earned fourth team recognition, was one of just three defensive players (out of 44) to make the cut from outside of those conferences.
