AMBLER, Pa. – Temple men's soccer topped Lafayette this morning, 3-0, in the team's first exhibition match of the preseason.
The match saw goals from freshmen Jorge Gomez Sanchez and Trevor Babin, and sophomore Matt Sullivan. Gomez Sanchez registered the only goal of the first half, scoring on a penalty kick with six minutes remaining.
The second half saw two Temple goals. In the 63rd minute, Sullivan dribbled past the goalkeeper from a left side pass to find the back of the net. Shortly after, in the 68th minute, Babin caught a cross from fellow freshman Jordan Wix-Rauch on the right side and headed in the team's third and final goal.
"I think the future is bright. For these guys to come in to their first collegiate game and show up on the scoreboard is pretty impressive," said head coach David MacWilliams regarding the freshmen performance. "Even though it's a scrimmage game, it's tough to do."
MacWilliams explored the depth of his bench, utilizing 23 players, including three goalkeepers. In total, the Owls led the Leopards in shots 15-3, with Lafayette leading 3-1 in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Cagle registered two saves for the Owls, with freshman Robin Goetz logging one save in his first appearance.
With a second exhibition match this Saturday at Drexel, the Owls hope to continue their momentum before their regular season opener against Manhattan on August 28.
