Women's Soccer Routs Delaware State, 5-0

8.23.15 | Women's Soccer

AMBLER, Pa. – Four second-half goals gave the Temple women's soccer team a 5-0 advantage over visiting Delaware State on Sunday, August 23. With the win, the Owls move to 2-0 on the season.

Temple had five different goal scorers in the game, led by senior Paula Jurewicz, who collected her second goal of the season. Jurewicz collected a rebound in the 15th minute, to give the Owls a 1-0 advantage that they would hold for the rest of the game.

Jurewicz, who played in 13 games last season before missing the second half of the season due to injury, is happy that the effort the team put into their offseason workouts is starting to show.

"We're really excited that all of our hard work in the preseason has paid off," said Jurewicz. "We've been spending a lot of time on finishing, because that's been our problem over the last couple of years, but it's really exciting to have eight goals in two games."

In the second half, Temple came out blazing and put the ball into the net four more times. In the 56th minute, redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto crossed the ball to senior Kelly Farrell, who headed the ball into the net to make the score 2-0. In goals that were almost 45 seconds apart, senior Shannon Senour collected a rebound off a previous save and sophomore Gabriella McKeown pulled the keeper out of the net for an easy goal to bring the Owls lead to 4-0.

The last goal was scored in the 71st minute, when sophomore Elana Falcone carried the ball up the field and found redshirt-sophomore Kayla Cunningham. Cunningham beat the keeper and tucked the ball in the right corner of the net, setting the final to 5-0.

Delaware State's best chance of a score came when Danielle Valente took a shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but senior Shauni Kerkhoff was there to make the save, the only one she needed to move to 2-0 on the season.

Even though the Owls had just a 36-hour turnaround between the Fairleigh Dickinson game and today, head coach Seamus O'Connor was very pleased with the energy the team showed.

"I was demanding the girls be prepared today and to bounce back from a short rest, but I loved the way they came out of the gate," said O'Connor. "They were unbelievable in the first half, and I told them 'this is great, but we have to finish this. You are halfway to your goal today.' And they responded in the second half and it was absolutely fantastic."

The Owls will return to Ambler on Friday, August 28 to take on Loyola at 4:00 p.m.
