Women's Soccer Escapes Rider, 2-1
9.1.15 | Women's Soccer
AMBLER, Pa. – After not allowing a goal to be scored in 334 minutes of play, the Temple women's soccer team gave up their first goal of the season as they defeated Rider, 2-1 on Tuesday. The Owls remain undefeated as they move to 4-0-0 on the season.
Temple was the first to score as senior Kelly Farrell picked her fourth goal of the season in the 40th minute of the game, after sophomore Elana Falcone slide her a pass that she tucked into the left corner of the net.
Rider's goal came in the 63rd minute of the game, when Emily Schmitt put one past Shauni Kerkhoff for the Broncs' score. Rider only had one other shot on goal from Hollie Kelsh. Goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard recorded seven saves.
Temple took the lead back in the 77th minute when redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto was able to net a ball off a pass from Farrell. Farrell later was ejected from the game on a red card in the 83rd minute.
The Owls recorded 24 shots in the game, including seven from redshirt-sophomore Kayla Cunningham and five from Farrell, with nine shots being on goal.
Even though the game was kept tight in scoring, head coach Seamus O'Connor is still very happy with the way the team performed.
"I'm very relieved that we won but we're very proud as well because we've gotten better," said O'Connor. "This is our preseason before the conference games, because that's when we want to be at our best. And we worked on some stuff this week within our attacks and today, you saw a lot more cutbacks from our inline."
The Owls will be back in action in their first road contest as they travel to city rival Penn on Friday, September 4. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m. at Rhodes Field.
