Women’s Soccer Faces Set of Weekend Matches

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's soccer team will look to advance to 6-0-0 on the season with a pair of matches this weekend. The Owls travel to city rival Penn on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Rhodes Field and will then host Lehigh on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. matchup.

The Owls are coming off a close 2-1 win over Rider on Tuesday. Senior Kelly Farrell picked her fourth goal of the season in the 40th minute on an assist from Elana Falcone. Farrell is tied for 10th in the NCAA and leads the American Athletic Conference in total goals and second in the conference in points (9).

Redshirt-junior Gina DiTaranto picked up her first goal of the season in the 77th minute. Farrell helped slide a ball to DiTaranto, who was able to shoot the ball straight back into the goal. The Owls took 24 shots against Rider, nine of them on goal. Redshirt-sophomore Kayla Cunningham tied her career-high shot total in a game recording seven attempts.

Temple currently ranks seventh in the country and first in the American Athletic Conference in total goals with 14. The Owls also rank 22nd in the NCAA and first in the conference in total points scored with 22. The Owls were ranked No. 7 in the recent NSCAA?Northeast Regional Poll, released on September 1.

The Owls allowed their first goal in 334 minutes of play when Rider's Emily Schmitt took a free kick from 25 yards out in the 64th minute of the game.
 
ABOUT PENN:
• Penn has only seen game action once this season, defeating Seton Hall 3-1 on August 30.

• Sophomore Lauren Petite was the first to score for the Quakers in the fourth minute of the game. The transfer from TCU sent a shot over the goalkeeper's head from about 30-yards out.

• Freshman Sasha Stephens picked up the other two goals to start her career at Penn. In the 16th minute, she scored her first career goal on a rebounded shot and then helped seal the win for the Quakers in the 56th minute.

ABOUT?LEHIGH:
• Lehigh enters with a 2-1-0 record, after recording a season opening 7-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's on August 21 and defeated Binghamton, 4-0 on August 30. In their game against Binghamton, the Mountain Hawks had early goals in the second and 13th minute.

• Freshman Sabrina Mertz leads the team in goals (3), points (7), and shots (8), with five shots on goal. In the 7-0 shutout over Mount St. Mary's, Mertz recorded her first career goal in the 19th minute; in the 70th minute, she was able to place the ball in the net again.

•Lehigh ranks 14th in the NCAA and first in the Patriot League in goals scored with 12 and total points with 36.

SERIES HISTORY…
• Penn leads the series with Temple, 6-5-0. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2012, when the Quakers defeated the Owls, 2-0.

• Temple and Lehigh are tied in their series, 4-4-1. The two teams haven't played each other since 2005, where the Mountain Hawks shut-out the Owls, 2-0.

• The Owls will travel to New Hampshire on Friday, September 11 to take on the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m.
