Men's Tennis Finishes Day One Of Joe Hunt Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Temple men's tennis team opened their fall season at the Joe Hunt Invitational, hosted by Navy on Friday.
In the A flight of singles, senior Nicolas Paulus was defeated by George Washington's Julius Tverijonas, 6-2, 6-3. In his second match of the day, Paulus lost Georgia Tech's Marco Lam, 7-6(2), 6-1. Also in the A singles flight, senior Santiago Canete dropped his first set of the day against Georgia Tech's Daniel Khanin, 6-1, 7-5, but picked up a win against Army's Michael Nguyen, 6-1, 6-3.
In B singles, freshman Artem Kapshuk put together an impressive performance. In his first set of the day, Kapshuk defeated Morgan State's Jeremy Field, 7-6(6), 6-2. In his second match, Kapshuk took down George Mason's Aaron Capitel, 6-2, 6-2 to move closer to the B singles championship on Sunday. Senior Hicham Belkssir also participated in the B singles flights, dropping both of his sets.
In the C singles flights, freshman Uladimir Dorash won his first set against St. Bonaventure's Miki Nobuzawa, 6-1, 6-2. Dorash later dropped his second match of the day to Navy's Tucker Massie, 6-7(7), 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Stephen Ong also participated in the C group, losing both of his matches of the day.
In D singles, junior Vineet Naran dropped his first match of the day to Delaware's Tim Puterio, 6-2, 7-5, but got a win again St. Bonaventure's Jacob Mishkin, 6-4, 6-1 later on. Junior Filip Stipcic picked up two wins on the day, taking out Navy's Andrey Majkic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first set of the day. Stipcic later defeated Georgia Tech's Jordi Portner, 7-5, 6-3 to move on in the tournament.
In the final group of singles play, senior Maros Januvka and Ian Glessing both dominated their opponents. Januvka picked up a win against UMBC's Kevin Hsieh, 6-2, 7-5 in the first match of the day, then beat Georgia Tech's Bart Panarese, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Glessing had similar success, defeating St. Bonaventure's Hristo Hristov, 6-1, 6-0 in the first match. Glessing later took down Army's Greg Shannon, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, the Owls only dropped one of their sets. Canete and Naran defeated Mary Washington's Stratton Gilmore and Nolan Perugini, 6-3. Ong and Stipcic took down Morgan State's Felix Andre and Niclas Hoepppner, 7-6(6). Paulus and Belkssir were victorious over St. Bonaventure's Hector Martinez and Carlos de La Cruz, 6-4. Dorash and Kapshuk were defeated by Army's Nguyen and Michael Sienko, 6-1.
The men will be back in action tomorrow during day two of the tournament.
