STORRS, Conn. – The three-time defending national champion UConn Huskies proved to be too much for Temple, as the Owls fell 104-49 on Saturday night in American women's basketball action. The win was the 16th-straight to open the season for the top-ranked Huskies who are now 16-0 overall, 6-0 in conference play. Temple falls to 11-6, 5-2 in The American.
UConn used runs of 24-0 in the first quarter and 14-0 in the second and didn't look back. The Huskies out-shot the Owls, 54.7% to 29.4%, while out-rebounding Temple 48-34, en route to their 53rd-consecutive victory.
Sophomore Alliya Butts finished with 12 points, six assists, and three steals, while classmate Khadijah Berger had 11 points. Junior Feyonda Fitzgerald rounded out the Temple highlights with eight points, five assists, and two steals.
After a 5-5 tie early in the first quarter, it was all UConn, as the Huskies went on a 24-0 run. The surge put the hosts ahead 29-5 with 1:15 left in the frame. The Owls were able to get some offense going in the final minute of play, ending the quarter on a 5-3 run, including a three from Fitzgerald making it 32-10 after one.
Temple kept pace with UConn early in the second quarter, out-scoring the Huskies 11-9, as a three from Butts made it 43-21 UConn with under five to play. From there, UConn closed the half with a 14-0 run to make it a 57-21 game at the break.
Fitzgerald led the Owls at the break with seven points and three assists, while Butts had five points and four assists. UConn held a slim 22-18 edge on the glass, but the Huskies out-shot the Owls, 57% to 27% in the frame. Breanna Stewart racked up 19 points, six rebounds, and four steals in the frame, while Katie Lou Samuelson had 16 points.
UConn opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to push their lead to 65-23. The Owls matched the Huskies after that surge, but UConn was hot from three, ending the frame with an 82-35 advantage.
UConn out-scored Temple 22-14 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory.
Breanna Steward finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Lou Samuelson had 21 points and six assists.
Temple returns to action on Thursday, hosting Big 5-rival Penn at McGonigle Hall.
